Why so often do a caesarean section?

According to the legend, the well-known Julius Caesar was born through cesarean section, which was later named in his honor. But, as it is known, in those days women did not survive after such a surgery that does not fit with the fact that Caesar's mother was alive after the birth of her son. Therefore, the relation of Caesar to this name has no relation. Most likely, the word originated in the year 715 BC, from a Roman lex caesarea. This was the name of the law under which it was ordered to deliver the baby surgically from the womb of a dead or dying mother. Another option is the origin of this word from the Latin words caedere and sesare. Both of these words have one meaning — to cut. Because currently in Russia by caesarean section born one child out of ten, a pregnant woman needs to know how you can prevent unnecessary surgical intervention.

Maybe it's an epidemic? Yes! And can you make it stop? Yes! In 1970 five percent of births in Russia was carried out surgically. After that, the number of caesarean sections has increased steadily by 1% every year. By 1990, this figure was 25-30%, i.e. about one million Russian women gave birth to children by caesarean section. Russia ranks fifth among the industrialized countries in the number of caesarean sections (first USA). From a medical point of view, we can't confirm that this is a way to improve nature. The increase in the number of caesarean sections did not improve neither the health nor the moral level of the mother and child. Most often a caesarean section do wealthy and married older women, i.e. those who, in common opinion, should be healthier and better prepared for childbirth.

In most European countries the number of caesarean sections is 10-15 percent of the total number of births. It is very doubtful that European women are better adapted to natural childbirth than the Russians. Maybe in Europe, women are better prepared for childbirth? Probably not, because in school young parents are available and even, in some cases, a required part of preparation for childbirth in Russia (although in some schools the teaching is quite superficial). There is only one factor that explains such a number of caesarean sections, is the practice of childbirth in Russia. Fortunately, women can significantly affect this factor.

The easiest and correct way to influence childbirth practices in Russia is the interference of nature. IVS and monitors firmly established in the Russian maternity hospitals. They assume a stationary labor. Women injections, stimulating or slowing labor. Epidural makes childbirth painless, but the mother can not accept in this process actively. Perhaps a modern approach ensures the life of the newborn in some cases, but the mother paid for it surgery.

Another factor influencing the decision to appoint a cesarean section, is the slogan: "the Child first". A few decades ago the Ob was called risky science. Nature does everything as it should, but it is imperfect. Taking into account this fact, doctors and patients decided not to wait for favors from nature. There were no guarantees that the child will be all right. There are no such guarantees and now, however, doctors and parents somehow believe that the more childbirth intervention occurs, the better will the child. We check, measure, monitor and control every aspect of pregnancy and childbirth. At the slightest deviation from the schedule we start to interfere in a natural process. In addition, if the couple had no children, if they wait for a late child, the last thing they want to risk it. And if a cesarean section is not considered a risky surgery, why tempt fate? This approach suits many doctors and patients.

Another reason for the epidemic of caesarean sections can be considered a fear of prosecution in the medical negligence. A study conducted in 1993 showed that more than in this area comes litigation over improper management of deliveries, the greater the percentage of caesarean sections. If the doctor did everything possible, including cesarean section, but the child is born disadvantaged, the court can hardly blame the doctor. Differently the same court would react to the doctor that will prove that you did everything possible, but have not performed a C-section. All the midwives with whom we talked on this subject, admitted that these operations could be halved if the fear of judicial responsibility not hung above the family. Doctors are afraid of being blamed just for what was not done a C-section. It is this fear that leaves scars on the women's bellies and in women's memory, and also increases charge for medical care.

Do money on reducing the number of vaginal births? Watching for years for the surgery, we came to the conclusion that the role of money is not too great, at least in most cases. The problem here is not so much money, but in time, as you know, time is money. Consider as an example two cases of childbirth. The woman who decided to give birth after a caesarean section, enters the hospital at 3am. It provides early warning to your doctor. After several doctor's visits, lengthy discussions and endless phone calls she is still in labor. Finally, at 2 a.m. the next day, almost a day, after a long labor and intensive care of the doctor she gives birth. The same labor would agree to a planned C-section is scheduled for 8am. The doctor would be free at 9 am. He would have spent a sleepless night and then I got to his office the next day. Or he could decide Cesareo during childbirth, using as a pretext the weak labor activity. Such a decision would have saved a lot of personal time doctor, his forces, but still would earn extra money.

Another reason for the increased number of caesarean sections we consider "Woe from wit". Normal delivery without complications can be long, painful, uncomfortable and even annoying, but they do not require surgical experience, the acquisition of which the doctor spent many years and effort. When birth ends that receives the doctor?

Did all the work mother, and she deservedly gets all the credit. And the doctor remain only trembling hands and maybe a cigar as a present from a happy father. But as soon as there is the slightest hint of any deviation, the doctor feels necessary and all-powerful. One has only to monitor no, as usual, the doctor rushes to save the child from possible injury. Everything happens within a few minutes. Another child saved! Now the experience and ability of the doctor popular and proven. After giving birth, when can't feel anything, doped up mother departs from the anesthesia in recovery and can't even get their reward in the form of a child, the doctor takes on a barrage of warm congratulations and expressions of gratitude.

Stay in labor before caesarean

You may think: "Why should I go through the pain and agony, if I'm still going to do a C-section?" The child is very good to be in battles, though it may be inconvenient to your doctor, and the hospital. So try to delay action as much as possible. First, it will help to determine that the child is ready to be born, and secondly, being in fights, the child will be able to receive an additional portion of natural hormones. The study showed that after cesarean section had been in fights children have less breathing problems than those that were extracted before labor starts. The child who felt the generic activities of the mother, more ready for the coming changes than the one who pulled out "without warning".
